Frictional Games and The Chinese Room created the seminal Amnesia Collection for PS4, one of the most frightening survival horror games on the market. Amnesia CollectionThe Amnesia series, especially Dark Descent and Justine, has received rave reviews in the past for its white-knuckled horror that buried you deep in the paranormal shivers three feet under.

Story and Setting

The Amnesia Collection consists of three separate narratives, taking place in dark, atmospheric locales that amplify the sense of horror and tension during gameplay.

- Amnesia: The Dark Descent - Be mindful of your past, you wake up in a desolated Castle with no remembrance of what who was and stumbles upon an eerie Space. The game sees you unfolding disturbing secrets and facing horrifying creatures. Pieces is based upon the story of Daniel, as he struggles to put his fractured mind together while hiding from horrors that threaten you in the shadows.

- Amnesia: Justine: A more recent and thankfully shorter but no less chilling experience, you must play as an unnamed character traversing through puzzles designed to end your life by the hand of the sadistic Justine. The decisions you make reveal the fate of other prisoners.

- Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs : Set in the same Victorian-era industrial world as the first game, this time following Oswald Mandus, a wealthy industrialist who has lost his memory of recent events. As he searches deeper into his nightmarish creation, he discovers a much greater conspiracy and faces off against the monstrous creations of his own design.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Amnesia: The Collection is notable for its emphasis on ambiance and psychological horror over combat. Key features include:

Exploration and Puzzles: To advance, players need to explore the environment, solve complex puzzles, and find clues. Environments are beautifully rendered and rife with hidden secrets that contextualize the narrative.

- Sanity Mechanic: An unusual sanity mechanic heightens anxiety in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Surrounded by darkness or witnessing strange phenomenon will take a toll on your sanity resulting in hallucinations, as well as making it harder to navigate the game world.

Stealth and Survival: There Combat is not a solution here. But instead, players must run away, stealthily avoid the terror that comes after them and have a sharp mind just to stay alive. The light sources are clearly important for survival but they could also lead to some unwanted attention.

Visuals and Presentation

Unsettlingly beautiful, the games in the "Amnesia Collection" feature some of the best environments and sound design around. The look is dark and grimy: each location a carefully constructed fright-home away from home. Ambient sounds and music play their part in contributing to the full horror experience, spamming the tension, so every creak or far-off whisper could be something terrifying.

Game Modes

Or, Claires releases there are three main game titles, each exactly one type of horror:

**Amnesia: The Dark Descent** - The first game in the series which will remain a staple of deep storytelling and advanced gameplay mechanics.

Amnesia: Justine (shorter, episodic content featuring moral choices and life-or-death scenarios)

- Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs** - a narrative-driven horror game that is tied into the themes of industrialization and madness.

Interesting Feature

One of the more interesting things regarding "The Amnesia Collection" is its strong reliance on environmental storytelling. In both of these games, each setting is used masterfully to communicate the story with surrounding environments telling their own tale. Whether it is in the rotting halls of a castle, the oppressive tunnels of an underground lair, or some Victorian machinery coughing steam amidst gloom and decay, the environment will play a central role in creating a sense of horror and immersion for players.
