Surviving Mars
"Surviving Mars" is one of those games that I would say stands as a shining light in the strategy/ city-building genre. The title is a city-building and management sim from Haemimont Games in partnership with publisher Paradox Interactive that puts players to the task of both establishing and maintaining civilization on humanity's first Martian colony. Out Now Surviving Mars City-building strategy on a red planet for PlayStation 4, March 2018 Out of the Park A true space-set city builder - it begs to be compared with Anno and Cities Skylines MEHResident Evil Code: Veronica "disasterpiece" is still worth playing BADWhat went wrong at Bioware? This is perfect for me since I am a fan of City Building games and the concept surrounding space colonization.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Where Surviving Mars really shines, though is in what it sets out to do: take the reality of trying to colonize a hostile alien planet and make it fun. The game drops you in at the deep end from your very first rocket landing on Mars, there to fend for yourself with limited resources and an obligation to provide oxygen, water and food sources for all of your colonists amidst a rather hostile Martian land. There is a real sense of means to an end as you move from meagre scraping, scratching just for daily survival needs met while your colony grows into -by comparison- something resembling more hustle and bustle.
In Surviving Mars, you will be working to take control of a group f domes that house your many colonists. These domes are living, breathing ecosystems that require careful management. You need to balance the power supply, air, water and food systems in addition to keeping your colonists happy & working efficiently. There are various challenges like dust storms, meteors and mysterious anomalies in the game that keep you engaged.
The research system is another element that helps make this one of the standout features in Endless Space 2 and much as you would expect, discovering new technologies can drastically alter how you approach colonisation efforts. While your people at home are waiting for aid, these technologies improve resource management or unlock new building types — some (Martianborn) even provide insight on the secrets of Mars itself.
Graphics and Sound
Surviving Mars is, on a visual level at least simply stunning. The red planet is recreated with intricate attention to detail. The different patterns of weather, the dust storms and beautiful sunsets add to the atmosphere making it feel like you are really on Mars. The domes, buildings and vehicles are thoughtfully designed in a way that is at the same time futuristic, but also utilitarian – perfectly in tune with the vision of Surviving Mars.
Not to mention, the soundtrack. On the other hand uncomplicated winds complement a remote and oppressive plain of empty space while you wonder how best to construct your colony. The radio stations/ talk shows and music on the frequencies in-game lend a particular charm to it that helps make the Martian world seem inhabited.
Replayability, Challenging Content
No matter how short the sessions, one of the components that continues to draw me back into Surviving Mars is its replayability. Depending on the parameters of your mission sponsor, commander profile and map location each playthrough may vary. The game is also full of mysteries — random events that add a narrative sort of depth and challenge to your game. Varying from finding alien artifacts to rogue AI events, all affect your campaign in a different way as you colonize the world.
Similar Games
Should you like Surviving Mars, there are a number of other games it is advisable to think about trying out:
1. "Cities: Skylines: Another excellent city builder game, but on Earth. North Hampton Planning Director Phil Corwin said the policy document is a reworking of where the town wants to be in five years and how it will address urban sprawl.
2. Planetbase: You will be managing a space colony as in RimWorld, except that your colonists are on different planets with all kinds of challenges. In the same vain as Surviving Mars in how its survival and resource manager.
3. Oxygen Not Included – A colony simulation game by the same developer, with a somewhat more humorous and cartoony style sharing the complex management/survival mechanics type of gameplay fans of Surviving Mars would love.
4. "Anno 2205": This game is one where you're taking your city-building to space, putting colonies on the Moon and other off-world spots. One is a blending of science fiction city-building and economic strategy.
Conclusion
That makes "Surviving Mars" a must-play for anyone who loves city-building games, especially if you're also into space exploration. The fact I was constantly playing a cat and mouse game with the resource system, along tough enemy AI behaviour combined with an exciting setting made it one of those games that went on to stand apart from all other titles in its genre. Either if you are an expert at strategy games or new to them, "Surviving Mars" provides a rewarding and intriguing experience.
