In 2000, Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced their second home video game console PlayStation 2, from their PlayStation family. It was initially marketed in Japan in March 2000, succeeded by the launch in North America in October, and in Europe and Australia in November of the same year. The PlayStation 2 is one of the sixth generations of video console that operates in a 128-bit processor together with Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube, and Microsoft Xbox.

PlayStation has its own manufactured central processing unit called Emotion Engine, which was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment and Toshiba solely for PlayStation 2 that runs in 300 MHz. The system RAM has a 32 MB of RDRAM and 4MB of eDRAM for the graphics adapters. PlayStation 2 has 40GB of hard drive; memory cards for additional storage can be inserted. PlayStation 2 utilizes two vector processing units, VPU0 and VPU1, Graphics Synthesizer, and an FPU to administer 3-dimensional graphics. For the console's sound, it has a 2ch 48KHz Pulse-code modulation, 5.1 Dolby Digital, and 5.1 DTS. PlayStation 2 is so cool that it can be connected to a 100 Mbit Ethernet Modem via adapter and USB 1.1 and there are loads of controllers you can use when playing PlayStation 2 like the DualShock 2, DualShock, PlayStation Controller, EyeToy, PlayStation 2 DVD Remote Control, and PlayStation Portable.

According to Sony, PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all era, with over 155 million items retailed in the global market. Other than that, PlayStation 2 also launched lots of games that everyone enjoys playing like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Final Fantasy, and FIFA 13.

In 2004, Sony redesigned PlayStation 2 with a slender body and ceased manufacturing older models. In year 2013, Sony declares that the production of PlayStation 2 will be terminated. PlayStation 2 is assumed to be one of the longest lifespans of video game console.
