Space Junkies

Space Junkies on PS4 is a frantic, fast-paced multiplayer arena-shooter developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and published by Ubisoft. Space Junkies was released earlier this year in March 2019 for players to live out their space-age dreams in VR! It only supports the PlayStation 4 VR and puts you in a high-stakes zero-gravity environment.

Gameplay and Mechanics

It is a fast and fun multiplayer shooter that takes place in 360-degree "arenas" or Orenas. Gameplay is focused on combining high speed flying, shooting and situational awareness - the fact you can fly in all 4 directions being one of them. The game features several multiplayer modes including Team Deathmatch, Free-for-all, Duel mode and the recently added King Mode where all players are competing to take down a targeted player.

What are the main Gameplay features?

Insane Weapons - Players are able to select from a large range of weapons including Sunblasters and Bioguns, which they can combine. Use an innovative draft weapon system to assemble your favorite stencil-comic-book-super-charged load-out!

VR Navigation – Taking full advantage of the VR set in this unique space combat environment, plays will experience complete freedom of movement and can fully use their surroundings for tactical purposes.

ALL about Multiplayer: The game is predominantly focused around multiplayer boasting both online and split-screen battles.

Though some players have found the controls to be finicky, particularly with a DualShock controller as opposed to full motion controllers on PC – which can hinder your response time and overall experience .

Visuals and Sound

Space Junkies is a game with sensations in technicolor, because its graphics are very vibrant and also complement perfectly the playful-explosive craziness. The arenas are intricate and there are all sorts of obstacles that can hinder battles, which also brings an excitement. The action is supported by great sound design that keeps players alert and aware of their surroundings in the chaos of combat.

Reception

Being outlined as probably one of the only games we can name with no complaints when it comes to its engagement and pacing, Space Junkies has received extremely well. Still, the game hasn't totally avoided criticism specifically surrounding its control scheme on PS4 which some players feel is less intuitive and reactive than it would be on PC. While it's great to see cross-play implemented here for matchmaking purposes, this easily puts those on PS4 at a bit of disadvantage going up against other players using more accurate mouse and keyboard controls.
