Trials of Mana, developed by Xeen and published by Square Enix, 3D remake of the Super Famicom game Seiken Densetsu 3, released in Japan only. This action RPG released on April 24, 2020 brings back the classic with updated graphics, better gameplay & more features while staying true to its cute predecessor.

Gameplay and Mechanics

In it, players select a party of three characters from six and each has their own storylines alongside abilities. With the game's combat system being action-oriented, it allows for a more fast-paced and fluid experience in comparison with turn-based mechanics from the original. During battles, players have the ability to swap between characters at will and use various abilities on enemies such as normal attacks, magic or weaponskills. One of the ways the remake has been expanded upon is with a class-change system, which sees characters turn into something else over time and learn new abilities along this track. The result gives players good reasons to re-play the game multiple times while bored IRL.

Visual and Audio Design

The high-fantasy world of 'Trials of Mana' is vividly recreated with rich 3D graphics Environments are rich and varied, ranging from dense green forests to ancient mystical temples; all meticulously detailed. The character models are full of detail, and truly show each characters nature and role in the narrative. The game is further updated with a newly remastered soundtrack which respects the original sound scores but brings them to full modern audio quality.

Story and Characters

The narrative of Trials of Mana is divided in six possible protagonists as they seek out a legendary artefact called the Mana Sword, or even vehicles to revive into become more threatening monsters who can end the whole world. Your choices will influence the individual story arcs of all four characters, and a single overarching narrative run through each point in time. This branching tale inspires multiple playthroughs so players can experience every character pairing and piece together the complete story.

Criticisms and Reception

Although "Trials of Mana" has been lauded for its loyal presentation to the original game and clever battle system, it received criticisms as well. Specific voice acting, up to and including some characters were accused of lowering immersion due being done not very well. In addition, some players found the game easy on even its hardest difficulties - which could potentially spoil veteran RPG fans that live for challenge.
